A Day In The Life Of Hermeti Balarin
Got what it takes to be an ECD? Seven daily meetings, lots of home-cooked meals and an evening art exhibition.
Have you ever wondered what life as an executive creative director would be like? Or questioned, whether you could do it?
Well, here's your chance to see if you've got what it takes to be Mother's ECD, Hermeti Balarin. The eccentric Brazilian opens the door on his working life and shares what a typical day looks like for him. One thing's for sure, stamina and energy are two characteristics that this creative doesn't lack.
He admits that while this type of questionnaire may not form the base of his job description, he thinks his success comes from being able "to hire people way smarter than myself." And despite creative and account people questioning exactly what it is that Balarin does on a daily basis - besides asking questions and running late to meetings - there's no doubt that he's an incredibly busy, organised and highly motivated professional... Just one that's incredibly difficult to keep up with.
08.30 Morning riser: My early morning trip on the overground - Hampstead to Shoreditch.
09.00 All change please: Changing at Highbury and Islington.
09.30 Calm before the storm: Ebor Street in Shoreditch at 9.30AM. Before the hordes of people arrive later in the day.
09.40 Breakfast at the red table: We all eat breakfast in the agency everyday.
09.45 Up the stairs: Before making my way up the concrete stairs to the second floor where we all sit together.
10.00 And so, it begins: The first meeting of the day is a conference call, as usual.
11.00 Second meeting of the day: Our meeting rooms are named after each employees' mothers. This one is Liz, named after (head of creative resource) Ben Heap’s mum (pictured).
12.00 Oops: The third meeting happens at the Round Sofas. It’s an internal creative
review. I made everyone wait, as I was running late from meeting number two.
13.00 Home-cooked: At 1 o’clock we all have lunch together at the Red Tables. The food is cooked by our own chefs. Today we had Jerk Chicken.
13.30 Condiments bring the dish to life: Still at lunch.
13.40 Confused-dot-com: We move around every six weeks. The whole office. This is the map showing where everyone sits. I’m trying to find my next meeting.
13.45 Where is it? Everyone sits together around one big table.
14.00 Fourth meeting of the day: My next meeting is with Mother strategist James Broomfield, a guy with hair bigger than mine.
15.30 Afternoon delight: Fifth meeting is a tense one.
16.30 Sixth meeting and counting: Another conference call.
17.00 Tea Time: A quick break for some tea and biscuits at the Red Tables.
17.30 Over and out: Onto the last creative review of the day (with a beer).
18.30 Exit while you still can: Making my way downstairs.
19.30 Evening inspiration: Time for Inside Zaatari’s exhibition with images created by the Syrian refugee kids.
