Homelessness is a problem that affects cities around the world.

Social organisation Auckland City Mission is tackling homelessness head-on by partnering with RAPP and creating a Cyber-Squatting campaign.

Addressing the increasing issue of homelessness in Auckland, the campaign taps into the idea of sleeping rough and has hijacked the unused .nz homepages of Kiwi organisations.

Some of the brands that have been used in this cyber-squatting campaign include Blue Star Group, Campaign (below), Toll Group and Olay.

By clicking the above links, a plain-looking page will appear featuring a picture and story about where a local homeless person sleeps. The site also contains information about the Mission with links to donate to their winter appeal.

“We wanted a campaign that was going to make people sit up and take notice of an important issue, which is why we have decided to use these organisations’ unused ‘homes’ for those who need them most - the homeless,” say Dame Diane Robertson from the Mission.

If organisations want to access their homepages, all they have to do is click the ‘I want my homepage back’ button and the cyber-squatter will be removed.

RAPP MD Robert Limb hopes the campaign will raise awareness of homelessness and squatting and encourage people to start talking about the problem.
