To mark the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, creative agency Grey Berlin in cooperation with SoundCloud has launched The Berlin Wall Of Sound.

The project is an acoustic reconstruction of the Berlin Wall using SoundCloud’s signature waveform player and has reached more than 70,000 views in the space of just three days.

Fittingly, SoundCloud’s Berlin headquarters are located in the original Todesstreifen (death zone area), right next to the former location of the Berlin Wall.

The Berlin Wall of Sound uses SoundCloud’s feature of displaying sound waves to let sound reconstruct the shape of the wall, its concrete barrier and its infamous watch towers. The creation also uses SoundCloud's Visual Tracks, a tool which synchronises multiple visuals behind the sound wave with one track.

The sound track is exactly 7:32 minutes long, which is the length of time sound would need to travel the Berlin Wall’s 155 kilometres.

The track is not easy listening. Its deep and menacing tonality is mixed with original quotes and voices of the responsible German Democratic Republic politicians like Walter Ulbricht, Erich Honecker and original voices from border guards.

Listen to the track below and see the visual version here.
