Director MJ Delaney tends to lose hours delving into movie screengrab sites, loses confidence while talking to an online radio station and her grip on reality when imagining she’s a cross between an anime princess and Gwyneth Paltrow in The Royal Tenenbaums. But she doesn’t lose her iPhone anymore thanks to a nifty app. Welcome to her list of inspiring artefacts

What the most creative advertising idea you’ve seen in the last few months?

I just saw loads of them at the Museum of New York’s exhibition of Mac Conner [illustrator for post-war US advertising].

What’s your favourite website?

film-grab.com – it’s useful and inspiring for work, but it’s also one of those rabbit hole websites where you suddenly find hours have passed and your eyes hurt.

What website do you use most regularly?

Pandora.com [personalised internet radio station]. I’ve even started talking to her now. Mainly to congratulate her, but when she chooses something really awful I feel like she’s judging me.

What’s your favourite video game?

Tetris. Although my father got so unsociably addicted to it that I give it a wide berth. Know your demons.

What product could you not live without?

The Find My iPhone app has greatly improved my quality of life.

What product hasn’t been invented yet that would make your life/job better?

Some kind of exo-skeleton. I’m always either freezing or sunburnt on a shoot.

What track/artist would you listen to for inspiration?

BONES; a British rock band that has found an audience in LA.

See bonesbandbones.com

What’s the best film you’ve seen over the last year?

I was a bit late getting round to it, but Blue is the Warmest Colour tied with The Grand Budapest Hotel.

What show/exhibition has most inspired you recently?

The Ange Leccia videos at the Palais de Tokyo were mesmerising.

If you could live in one city, where would it be?

I lived in London my whole life and was all ‘why would anyone live anywhere else?’, until I moved to New York, which has made me want to live in loads more cities. Los Angeles, Paris, Amsterdam, Tokyo… everywhere. I choose ‘all’.

PlayStation or Xbox?

Wii.

Who’s your favourite designer?

Vivienne Westwood. Nobody drapes a curve like Viv.

What fictional character do you most relate to?

In my fantasy world, I am an indomitable hybrid of [film characters] Margot Tenenbaum and Princess Mononoke. In reality I don’t write plays or ride wolves and am probably a bit too ordinary to associate with a fictional character.

What’s your favourite magazine?

My friend Zahra is about to release the second edition of her ROADFEMME zine. It’s an independent newspaper zine for people who are passionate about social change and is filled with art, photography, rants, poems and interviews.

Who’s your favourite photographer?

Beniamino Barrese; he does beautiful things with natural light.

If you could have been in any band, what band would you choose?

If anyone’s answered anything other than TLC to this, they’re lying.
