Denver Broncos star quarterback Peyton Manning broke the NFL touchdown pass record yesterday as he threw his 509th career scoring pass in his team’s 42-17 win over San Francisco 49ers.

The eight-yard pass in the second quarter of Sunday’s game was caught in the end zone by Demaryius Thomas to eclipse the record of 508 touchdowns Brett Favre set in 2010 while playing for the Minnesota Vikings.

He reached the milestone in just his 246th regular-season game (it took Favre 302) and despite missing the entire 2011 season with a serious, potentially career-ending neck injury, has shown admirable perseverance to bounce back and break the record to prove himself as one of the game’s legends.

Manning has also become a bit of a legend in the sports marketing arena, appearing in a string of campaigns for DIRECTV and Gatorade with brother, Eli.

Brothers on the beat

Life as a quarterback can be rough and Manning has taken his fair share of knocks in his 16-year professional career but in Deutsch New York’s DIRECTV spot the pair star as Football Cops – Peyton as Mike Tahoe and Eli as C.J. Hunter. The unlikely duo makes a stand against crime on the mean streets armed only with American footballs in the Bryan Buckley-directed ad produced through Hungry Man.

 Sweat shop

From fighting crime to fitness, the record-breaking quarterback swaps his badge for a nametag in TBWAChiatDay Los Angeles’ campaign for Gatorade. Sweat It to Get It encourages consumers to prove they are worthy of purchasing the sports drink by inviting them to work out on the spot. Set in a convenience store, the Caviar LA-produced spot sees Manning appear as shop manager and takes his star struck customers by surprise. Jody Hill is the director behind the footage and the work includes eight videos in total.

Live and direct

Gone are the days when a phone was just a phone. In another DIRECTV campaign, the brothers pair up to promote the company’s online sports streaming service, which allows fans to view the action anywhere and at any time. Delivered in the form of a funny rap video by Grey New York with Butter Music & Sound, the scenes are once again shot by Bryan Buckley. With some hilarious lyrics and a concept for everyone, the campaign was a winner to promote the 2013-14 season coverage.

Football fantasy

Continuing the rap theme with an equally catchy hip hop-themed song, the Mannings return with another funny music promo for the broadcaster. Created to promote the launch of DIRECTV’s exclusive Fantasy Zone channel, the first to be dedicated to nothing but fantasy football, the pair breaks into song once again in honour of the celebrated hobby. The brothers conjure up a variety of humorous football fantasies, including a football filled with nachos, a goal post that doubles as a waterfall, and a shower that produces hundreds of tiny footballs instead of water through Grey, this time with direction from Director X.

Whether you follow football or just love a laugh, Peyton Manning has proved himself as a top sportsman and you can view all the above campaigns together here.
