UK Music Video Awards Winners 2012
Promo-makers and prod cos descended on Leicester Square’s Empire Cinema last night for the annual prize-giving.
Last night, the fifth annual UK Music Video Awards saw the cream of music promo-makers and production companies descend on the Empire Leicester Square to celebrate creative excellence in music videos at an event hosted by DJ, comedian and filmmaker Adam Buxton.
British artists who scooped awards at the event include Plan B, Alt-J, Spiritualized, Will Young, Kasabian, One Direction and M.I.A. – whose video for Bad Girls, directed by Romain Gavras, picked up The Video of the Year award as well as Best Pop Video and Best Styling in a Video. Romain Gavras also picked up the prestigious Best Director award.
Daniel Wolfe took home the Best UK Dance Video award for the second year running for The Shoes Time To Dance video, which also picked up the Best Editing in a Video award, and saw its producer, Lee Groombridge honoured with the Best Producer accolaid.
The Shoes weren’t the only French act to do well this year. Other winners were Justice, whose video for New Lands (directed by Spanish directing team Canada, winners of the MVAs Best Director award last year) won Best Art Direction and Design in a Video, and Woodkid who collected the award for Best Visual Effects in a Video.
Woodkid is the musical guise of the director Yoann Lemoine, who also picked up the Best International Pop Video award for his video for Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die. Other American artists to win awards were Frank Ocean, The Shins, Feist and Fleet Foxes, with Sean Pecknold, brother of Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold on hand to receive his award for Best Animation in a Video.
Meanwhile actor Aidan Gillen presented The Icon Award to Jamie Thraves, whose 14 year career has seen him work with the cream of music talent including Radiohead, Blur, Coldplay and The Verve, to name but a few. Jamie made his first feature film, The Low Down, with Aidan in 2000 (which also featured a cameo appearance by the MVAs host, Adam Buxton) and was reunited with him in 2010 for his latest feature Treacle Jr. Tributes to Jamie on the night included messages from Travis, Alex James from Blur and Kristina Train.
This year also sees our very own writer David Knight honoured with an Outstanding Contribution award for his 20-year dedication to highlighting and promoting music video makers and their work; first through his editorship of Promo magazine, then later via his own music video website Promo News. In 2007, Knight was instrumental in creating the music video bi-monthly showcase at the BFI Southbank, BUG, and the UK Music Video Awards.
