Bob Dylan’s classic The Times They Are a-Changin’ has been covered by Simon and Garfunkel, Bruce Springsteen, Flogging Molly, and now an orchestra of printers. A total of 97 outmoded printers and various electronic relics have been soldered, glued, and generally reengineered for a MIDI arrangement of the archetypal protest song.
When Grey London set out to create “an innovative piece of online content to support the launch of Brother’s new MFC inkjet printer range” Partizan’s Chris Cairns came through with this intriguing musical execution. Here, the buzzing and whirring of Dylan’s tune is used to voice the sentiment of a generation fed up with old and clunky printer technology. Cairns' previous work through Partizan includes turning a city into a musical playground for Channel 5 and a roundabout into a DJ’s turntable for Eclectic Beats. The director and production company alike have a history of harmoniously blending their message with playful experimentation; a creative model primed for driving online content.
