On Sunday 5 February, Super Bowl XLVI will take centre stage at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. As one of the most watched annual sporting events on TV, each year not only fans of the NFL tune in, but all eyes in the advertising world anticipate who and what will appear during the prestigious commercial breaks throughout the game. Doritos is always a certainty to feature, and has once again launched its Crash the Super Bowl competition with the chance for aspiring filmmakers to win $1m.
Having just released its five shortlisted user-generated spots - which viewers are now invited to vote on with the chance of winning $10,000 - this year, the selection looks as healthy as ever. And considering it’s the first time the event will be streamed live on the internet, there’ll be even more exposure for the lucky winner.
Crashing the airwaves at the 2012 event is a diverse bunch of scenarios full of the usual wacky humour including sly canines, cunning grandmas (as seen in Sling Baby by Kevin T. Wilson, above), crazed co-workers and hot wild girls. All there in these five chosen films, it’s now over to you, the viewer, to pick your favourite for the almighty slot.
Whichever spot makes it to the Super Bowl will be aired to a mammoth audience alongside ads for the world’s biggest brands, helmed by the world’s biggest commercials directors. But reputation means nothing because if it is voted top of the USA Today Ad Meter, the Doritos spot’s maker will receive a $1m prize, just as J.R. Burningham did last year for his Pug Attack effort.
A second prize is up for grabs as a team of Doritos employees will choose another finalist. They will be offered a job working on a real Doritos project with Andy Samberg’s comedy collective, The Lonely Island.
You can see all five shortlisted spots above and below and follow the progress/vote at Crash the Super Bowl.
