This Thursday sees the beginning of HazazaH Film and Photography's two month exhibition, arranged and hosted by the Artworks Gallery, Amsterdam. Held at its Glassworks venue, it's the first time the group of photographers at the company have put on an event showcasing their work together. Producer and Artworks organiser Hannah McDonald looks ahead to the exhibition.

Tell us a bit about the project and how it came about?

In late 2009, Glassworks Amsterdam arranged its first exhibition, selecting the work of photographer Akim Zerouli for the first show. The name Artworks was used to separate the events from the day-to-day business of post production, but essentially the core values remained the same; a passionate interest in innovative and beautiful work, regardless of medium. The preview evening was a great success, with live Spanish guitars, red wine, cheese and beautiful photography.

The event became a really 'gezellig' [cosy] evening, as we would say in Amsterdam. Since then we've arranged exhibitions every two months, showcasing a huge variety of work including painting, photography, video, sculpture and illustration. The preview evenings themselves have become increasingly popular and a great way to get to know others in the industry. As a company, Glassworks felt this would be the perfect way to get to know our Dutch neighbours and show off our lovely canal-side space. It has also been an excellent opportunity for both established and up-and-coming artists to display their talent in a space visited by those working in the creative industries.

How has the preparation been shaping up?

I am constantly looking out for new artists to feature, we don't limit the artists to those in the same industry and in fact, we encourage exhibiting the work of up-and-coming, younger artists. On this occasion however, we are especially honoured to be exhibiting such established photographers; those represented by HazazaH. The selection of work has been chosen to compliment the space we have on offer and the diversity of photographers on show.

A lot of work has gone into organising the exhibition and the preview evening itself. Food, drinks and music are all tailored for each event and all are specifically aimed to compliment the work we are exhibiting. Samantha Maynard, Glassworks office manager, is key to the success of the evening, with the initial preparations beginning immediately after the last event. It is always really exciting to see the new work on our walls and the success of the events themselves are a testament to the hard work put in by everyone involved.

Of course collaboration with the artists is essential and we always have to make sure both parties are happy with arrangements. We're lucky that we essentially share the same goals as the artists and those that represent them, so I can honestly say that working with HazazaH for this show has been a real pleasure.

What sort of work can we expect to see at the event?

The pieces chosen for this exhibition represent a selection from each photographer's autonomous work or something precious from their personal archives. With both traditional portraiture and still-life work given a modern twist, the photographs are a truly beautiful demonstration of presenting both subject and technique.

The work is quietly powerful when seen either individually, or within the context of the collection as a whole. With the variety of work on display, I truly believe this exhibition will appeal to a wide audience. As this is something I really enjoy working on, finding new artists to exhibit is an ongoing task but one that genuinely doesn't feel like work at all.

Describe the venue for those that haven't been before?

Our offices are based in the renovated US Consulate in Amsterdam; we have huge open spaces with expanses of white walls and lots of natural light - perfect for exhibitions. With a large open-plan space, it is also ideal for hosting the launch events, and in the summer months we are able to take the party outside into our garden with yummy BBQs.

What does the term 'good art' mean to you?

Good art to me is something that surprises and interests its audience. I personally like work that can speak to a lot of people at the same time and doesn't require an in-depth understanding, to be appreciated. Good art should speak to us straight away regardless of the content or artist.
In regards to work that is relevant for Artworks, our space is a working environment so I think it is essential for the work to bring a positive and energetic tone. I don't want people to be offended or disappointed by the art. Most importantly I think the work should speak to the range of talented individuals we have entering our office on a daily basis. Who better to review the exhibition than those who work in the creative industries themselves?

Where do you get inspiration from?

The thing I love most about our industry is the varied interests and talents people have outside of the office; the short films, the artworks and photography. I find it very inspirational that although people are dedicated to their daily work they still find time to use their creativity for their own ends. I think maybe Artworks is a chance for people to show this side of themselves where no briefs or financial limitations are in place.

Will there be more events like this and what are your future plans?

We plan to carry on Artworks' success, with artists already planned until the end of 2011. I hope these events continue with the same pace and energy they have so far. I hope people continue to come to these preview evenings and still find them an entertaining way to network whilst sampling great art, music, food and wine.
