Weekly Rewind: June 2
Giant sloth bones, Trump trip-ups, nude protests and 7 more of our favourite stories from around the web this week.
1. Will You Be Replaced By A Robot?
As everyone knows, eventually your Amazons Alexas and Oculus Rifts are going to rise up and take over. However, as Mashable reports, some of us are closer to the back of the line of the robot revolution. You can find out what the probability is that a robot will be taking your job via a new site. Most of us in the creative industries are relatively safe, but if you dabble in truck driving, you might want to get onto those job sites...
2. The Good, The Bad and the Covfefe
Neologisms shape our world. Our lives are marked by newly coined words like 'selfie', 'Brexit' and 'vajazzle'. 2017, however, gives us perhaps the most defining of them all; covfefe. AV Club was among the million speculating as to the meaning of this Trump tweet, summing up some of the funniest responses.
3. ...and Trump's Controversial Decision
But Trump hasn't just hit the headlines this week for coining new words. This morning, the BBC revealed that he's also decided to withdraw the US from the 2015 Paris Agreement, signed by President Obama to reduce fossil fuel consumption. While Trump claims he's protecting his citizens, leading businessmen like Elon Musk, CEO and CTO of SpaceX, Tesla and SolarCity, and Disney CEO Robert Iger have subsequently resigned from their White House advisory roles... perhaps we really are doomed.
4. How Far is Too Far?
We promise we're not Trump obsessed... it's not every week that Trump trumps our Weekly Rewind list. But comedian Kathy Griffin took things a step too far when she uploaded a photo and video of herself holding a decapitated model of the President's head as part of a stylised photoshoot. While he may not be the most popular President, the public openly critiqued the comedian's stunt and she's since been dismissed from CNN, says NPR.
5. Teens Invent Date Rape Drug Detection Straw
While some fully-fledged adults (including the one writing this) still laugh every time someone mentions the London Tube stop Cockfosters, there are teens out there changing the world. Like three girls in Florida who have invented a straw featuring a test strip that turns blue if a drink contains common date rape drugs. The video above and an article on Indy 100 tell us more about this trio of amazing women.
6. MoMA Gets a Modern Makeover
New York's most iconic art gallery, the MoMA has revealed its grand plans to expand into the newly-demolished American Museum of Folk Art, says NY Times. Costing a whopping $400 million, the move will create more space for featuring work from minority and female artists as well as revamping the main lobby. But most of all, it just highlights how un-modern the museum currently is.
7. Naked & Screaming to Prove a Point
There are plenty of ways to get your point across, but in Argentina screaming while naked is clearly the perfect way to protest violence against women. The Metro reported that 120 women from the Artistic Force of Communicative Shock (FACC) gathered outside the president's palace, Casa Rosada, in Buenos Aires to expose the shocking statistic that femicide occurs once every 25 hours in the country. It's certainly provocative.
8. Is that a Giant Sloth Bone in Your Subway or Are You Just Happy to See Me?
It's not every day that you find a sloth in the city, so when the Metropolitan Transportation Authority in LA found a bone belonging to a giant sloth while digging a new train line, it must have been quite a surprise for the workers. Per WJLA, it is thought to be a fossilised hip joint dating back to 11,000 years ago, it's bound to get the residents of LA thinking about what roamed their terrain before the train opened.
9. New York Times Mag Goes Comics Crazy
Though for most of us comics mean Peanuts and The Bash Street Kids, for decades graphic novels like Maus and Fun Home have used the medium to tell serious stories beautifully. Now, New York Times is dedicating their whole weekend magazine to the art form, working with different illustrators to tell the best stories they've collected across New York.
10. 50 Years of Sgt. Pepper
Although even the most nostalgic among us are probably sick of Beatles anniversaries, the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band this week has definitely brought up some fascinating TV, radio, and print, including this great piece from Vulture. Plus, any chance to listen to that album again is worthwhile. See you in 2018 for The White Album's 50th!
